CAD/CAM Restorations in Just One Visit
When a tooth is in need of a restoration, our dental team is able to use CEREC CAD/CAM technology to provide you with a same-day solution. What does CAD/CAM stand for? CAD is short for “computer-aided design” while CAM stands for “computer-aided manufacturing.” Using this technology together allows us to quickly custom-design and fabricate tooth-colored fabrications, porcelain crowns, onlays, and inlays.
CAD/CAM restorations are often the best choice for patients looking for a healthy, beautiful, and natural-looking smile. Some of the other advantages that come with these restorations include:
- They Are Very Accurate
- Only a Minimal Amount of Tooth Preparation Is Needed, Leaving More of a Healthy Tooth Structure Intact
- They Usually Require Only One Appointment, Even When We Are Working On More Than One Tooth
- The Restorations Are Made of Tooth-Colored Materials
Your Bridge or Crown Procedure
The very first step in adding your new bridgework or crown is for our dentist to numb the area so you are comfortable throughout the process. Depending on the situation, we may also use a rubber dam to protect the rest of your mouth while we work.
Once you are fully numbed, we will begin to remove any decay and shape the damage tooth or teeth with a hand piece. A reflective powder is then applied to the prepared tooth or teeth. This allows our equipment to “see” the contours of the prepared tooth or teeth so that a digital image can be taken. Using a special optical infrared camera, this digital image records the tooth’s exact dimensions and supplies them to the CAD/CAM computer. This image, and specialized computer software, allows us to carefully design your restoration.
To ensure that your restoration looks natural in your mouth, our dentist will select the appropriate material in the matching shade for your specific missing tooth or teeth. This material is then placed into a milling machine which shapes it into a custom-fitted restoration.
When the restoration is finished, we will then add any custom coloring as needed and bond or cement the restoration in place. It is then polished to a beautiful luster. Finally, we check your bite and make any final adjustments needed.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is an artificial replacement that restores missing tooth structure by surrounding the remaining coronal tooth structure after the decay is removed from the tooth. Crowns are necessary to fix teeth that are broken down to the point where a filling simply won’t be effective enough. In order to correctly place a crown, some of your tooth structure may need to be taken away so that an aesthetically-pleasing fit can be attained.
What Is a Bridge?
A bridge is designed to replace missing teeth without the use of a dental implant or a denture. The false tooth is, instead, held in place by attaching it to a neighboring tooth. In order to fabricate a bridge, crowns are made for the teeth on either side of the space and a false tooth is then placed in between the crowns.
